Description:
Sol-Gel's proprietary platform nanotechnology is an innovative concept, that involves the encapsulation, at room temperature, of active ingredients in micro- and nano-sized glass (silica) matrices as well as nanospheres utilizing a chemical process called sol-gel.
The need for micro-encapsulation is widely accepted in the pharmaceutical and other markets. The two main benefits to micro- encapsulation are:
Ingredients such as UV-filters, present in sunscreen formulations, can be isolated from contact with the skin. In other products, dyes can be completely entrapped to prevent staining.
Release and delivery of active ingredients such as medicines, vitamins and antibiotics can be accurately controlled, increasing effectiveness and diminishing side effects.
The alarming levels of sun induced premature skin aging, undesirable skin alterations and melanomas have led to a heightened awareness of the need for sun protection. Sunscreens containing an extremely high percentage of active ingredients have become the first line of defense. These are sold over the counter and applied directly to the skin.
Recent research suggests that many of the sun-blocking ingredients such as octyl methoxycinnamate are themselves detrimental to health when absorbed by the skin.
In addition, these ingredients are not photostable. When they break down over time, they are likely to release free radicals that may cause damage to the DNA. Nonetheless, blocking the sun remains an essential part of protecting the skin.
