Description: By 2003 revenues lost to counterfeiting accounted for an estimated €600bn, a total of 10% of world trade. The problem is expected to increase rapidly, some sources expect a doubling over 2-3 years. In 2002 EU companies lost about €65bn (equivalent to 200,000 jobs) to counterfeit trade, of this the UK accounted for a loss of €15bn.
As an example of the seriousness of the problem, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has stated that about 2% of aircraft parts changes (around 500,000 pa) were counterfeit, substandard or falsely documented.
There is therefore a need for brand protection and anti-counterfeiting solutions that go beyond simple barcode and optical systems. Nanotechnology allows novel types of materials response which can be field read and used to identify original items or information systems.
Oxonica is working to develop the full solution package in a variety of areas: including readers, software and novel labeling systems. |
